Vienna, Austria

St. Stephen’s Cathedral, stands today the most important religious building in Austria’s capital.  The Romanesque/Gothic architectural form tourists flock to today actually stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first of which was consecrated in 1146.  On top of this, bodies which have been carbon dated to the 4th century have been discovered in the ground below the site, suggesting that this particular location has been a religious center for many, many generations.
