Amaru – Puno, Peru

Conveniently located right next to Hostal Monterrey, for quick and easy access back to your room once those never ending drinks hit you, Amaru is my top bar pick in Puno.  Is it also quite possibly the best reggae bar in the world??  I would certainly vote yes…but I might be partial.  I absolutely love the crew at Amaru…of course any bar owners that can recognize their customers in the middle of the street, completely out of context, after one meeting get a big thumbs up in my book.

Peru - Kat4 206The fact that mi amigos make a damn good Mojito, and know how to keep them coming, doesn’t hurt their reputation in my eyes either.

Of course Amaru wouldn’t be what it is without the people who come through.  The bar is full of young travelers, as well as young locals and temporary residents of Puno, each offering their own great vibe to the overall atmosphere of the place.  I’m not sure I’ve ever really felt at home in a bar (I’m not generally a “lets go out drinking” type of girl), but if I were to live in Puno, Amaru would be my spot for sure.  Any place that one can hang out in for two nights and enjoy meeting so many new friends to laugh and dance with is clearly a winning location!  The owners also seem to have a knack for connecting those patrons who should be networking, creating possible business connections in pleasurable surroundings.

The energy at Amaru is heightened by the energy of it’s owners – who are both eager to dance the night away with good people – and ready to take care of those who’ve had a bit too much to drink as well.  At no other bar have I seen the girl that got too drunk to leave get a head massage, copious amounts of water served, and an escort back to their hotel.  The guys at Amaru are especially good to their patrons – and seem to really care.  It’s refreshingly unexpected.

Another great feature at Amaru is that you are remembered forever as a part of it’s history by a bit of writing on the walls.  Amusing statements and food for thought cover almost every inch of wall space – teasing those passing through to write something even more creative than the last person…

And just when you were sad about having to leave the bar for the last time, and leaving Puno the next day…you find the perfect phrase upon the wall:

And I definitely plan on coming back…
